What Should You Do If Something Gets Flushed Down the Toilet?

Accidentally flushing something down the toilet can happen fast, especially in busy households with kids, guests, or everyday distractions. Toys, wipes, jewelry, hygiene products, small containers, and other objects can disappear before you have time to react. The important thing is knowing what to do next.

The first step is to stop flushing. Many homeowners try flushing again to see if the object clears, but that can push the item deeper into the drain line. If the item becomes lodged farther down the pipe, it may create a harder clog and lead to backups.

What Items Cause Toilet Problems?

Toilets are designed to handle human waste and toilet paper only. Items like wipes, cotton swabs, paper towels, dental floss, toys, feminine hygiene products, and small household objects do not break down the same way toilet paper does. Even items labeled “flushable” can create problems inside the plumbing system.

If the flushed item is visible, you may be able to carefully remove it with gloves. Do not use sharp tools or anything that could scratch the toilet bowl or push the object farther into the trap.

Should You Use a Plunger?

A plunger may help if the problem is a soft clog. However, if a solid object was flushed, plunging can sometimes wedge it tighter inside the toilet trap or drain line. If you know a toy, cap, or other hard item went down, it is usually better to call a plumber instead of forcing it through.

A professional plumber can determine whether the object is stuck in the toilet itself or farther down the line. In some cases, the toilet may need to be removed to retrieve the item safely.

Signs the Object Is Still Stuck

You may still have a blockage if the toilet flushes slowly, water rises higher than normal, gurgling sounds occur, or other drains begin acting strangely. Repeated toilet backups are another sign that the item did not fully clear.
