Looking to Get a New Water Heater?
If your water heater is more than ten years old, it may be time to consider replacing it. As temperatures get colder, it becomes more difficult for a water heater to do its job. Take a look at your water heater to ensure all connections look good and there is no rust anywhere. You’ll also want to note any leaks surrounding the heater.
If either one of the above issues is evident, you may need a new water heater.
If your water heater is on the older side, you may be pleasantly surprised by the variety of options available today. New technology focuses on energy conservation and reducing your monthly bills.
Our team is available to look at your current water heater and provide recommendations for repair or replacement.
Putman and Sons offer two brand options for a replacement water heater, and we can provide recommendations based on the needs of your household.
Are You Prepared For The Cold?
We are in the thick of winter here in Michigan. Be sure that you have prepared your home for the deep freeze that we know all too well. Unfortunately, we visit homes that haven’t had the necessary precautions taken. Here are a few tips to ensure your home is ready.
- Remove hoses from outdoor faucets – if water remains in the hose, it can freeze and expand and cause your pipes to burst.
- Keep your pipes warm – if you have pipes in a colder part of your home, including a crawl space or a basement, consider wrapping them with heat tape.
- Seal any holes – take a look around your home and identify any holes or cracks. Use foam insulation to fill the gaps and prevent cold air from getting in.
- Check your furnace – make sure your furnace is in good shape before the cold hits. Biannual maintenance for your furnace is a great idea to ensure it works when you need it most.
We hope the tips above will help keep you and your family warm and ready for the cold temperatures. If you require plumbing services, contact our experts today!

What Can You Put in Your Garbage Disposal?
Your garbage disposal may seem like it can grind up anything you please, but you should only grind up small debris. You want to protect the blades as much as possible to avoid wear and tear and a replacement.
When using your garbage disposal, you need to always run it with water to drain and break down the foods, otherwise, you may damage the blades. Most garbage disposals should last about 10 years, but that lifespan can be greatly reduced if you use it to grind up any of the banned items listed below.
Okay to put in your garbage disposal:
- Most fruits and veggies: Your garbage disposal can easily handle most fruits and veggies. Avoid the items listed in the banned foods
- Wet pet food: Take care of your pet’s uneaten wet food by dumping it down the disposal!
- Meat scraps that are cooked: Avoid big chunks if you are dumping these down the disposal.
- Fruit rinds: Fruit rinds like oranges and lemons can help to clean your disposal and will leave it smelling fresh and citrusy!
Banned from your garbage disposal:
- Large Bones: The best way to quickly damage your disposal is with bones! Avoid them at all costs!
- Artichoke leaves: These leaves are known to jam disposals, throw them in the trash instead.
- Grease: This gooey disaster will clog your drains and back them up, disposal or not.
- Nuts: Grinding nuts up in your disposal will result in a sticky mess, like peanut butter.
- Fruit pits: Throw these in the trash! Banana peels: Like artichokes leaves and asparagus, these will jam your disposal.
- Corn husks: These can jam your disposal if you put too much in, just throw them in the trash!
- Rice and Pasta: Rice and pasta will expand in your drain and can create clogging issues.
- Asparagus: These are known the jam disposals like banana peels and artichoke leaves.
If you follow these rules above, your garbage disposal should last longer. Contact us today if you have any further questions!
Why Does My Water Stink?
If you notice your water is smelling funky, you may have hard water in your home. Hard water contains minerals such as magnesium and calcium, which makes it considered hard water. This water can contain a funky odor, but it is safe to drink and is not harmful. If your water smells like rotten eggs, then you may need to drain and clean out your water heater. This is due to the buildup of hydrogen sulfide, which is not harmful to human health but can cause corrosion in your pipes. If you notice moldy or earthy smells, it is recommended to clean your faucet you notice it on with vinegar. If you smell it coming from other faucets, we recommend calling a professional to test your water quality.
Funky-smelling water is never a good sign. If you notice your tap water smelling suspicious, it is best to contact a professional rather than guess yourself. Call us today so you can get your water back to being odorless as soon as possible!
